Link Aggregation Groups
A Link Aggregation Group (LAG) is a feature of AWS Direct Connect that allows you to bundle multiple connections to increase the total available bandwidth and provide redundancy to your network. LAGs can be created using multiple Direct Connect connections of the same capacity, which are then combined to create a single, logical, and aggregated connection. This feature enables you to scale your on-premises connectivity with AWS while also providing a higher level of fault tolerance and load balancing for your network traffic.
Guide for AWS Direct Connect: Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs)
What is Link Aggregation Group (LAG)?
A Link Aggregation Group (LAG) is a feature of AWS Direct Connect that allows you to bundle multiple connections into a single, larger connection. This increases the bandwidth between your network and AWS Direct Connect by aggregating multiple connections and balancing the network traffic across them.
Why is it Important?
LAGs are important because they can provide increased bandwidth, better reliability and redundancy. If one connection fails, traffic automatically switches to the other connections in the LAG, maintaining availability.
How it Works
LAGs combine multiple connections into a single one, consolidating them into a larger logical connection. AWS Direct Connect equally balances or distributes incoming and outgoing traffic between all connections in the LAG group.
Exam Tips: Answering Questions on LAGs
1. Understand the concept: Key to answering questions about LAGs in an exam is understanding its core concept of multiple physical connections acting as a single logical connection.
2. Get the facts right: LAGs can bundle up to 4 connections and should not be used to bundle connections that are linked to different AWS accounts.
3. Practical Application: Keep in mind that LAGs provide increased data throughput between your network and AWS, as well as failover benefits. Consider potential scenarios where these benefits would be key to an architecture.
4. Remember the limitations: All connections in the LAG must use the same bandwidth.
