Guide on Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)

What is BIOS?
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It is a type of firmware used during the booting process (start-up) of computers. The primary function of the BIOS is to identify, check, and initialize the various hardware components in the system, such as processor, memory, disk drives, and others, then hand over the control to the operating system.

Why is BIOS important?
BIOS is critical because it starts the process of launching your OS after the computer's power gets switched on, and checks the health and setup of your system. It also sets up the environment that allows software and hardware to communicate. Without BIOS, your computer wouldn’t know how to interact with its own hardware components.

How does BIOS work?
When a computer is switched on, the BIOS performs a 'POST' or Power-On Self Test, identifying and initializing system hardware to make certain everything is working correctly. After completing the POST, the BIOS starts the bootloader, which then loads the operating system.

Exam Tips: Answering Questions on BIOS
Understanding BIOS is crucial for any IT related exam, especially for Comptia A+. Here are some exam tips:

Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) practice test

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a firmware interface that initializes and tests computer hardware components during the startup process. It acts as an intermediary between a computer's hardware and its operating system, typically stored on a motherboard's ROM chip. BIOS is responsible for POST (Power-On Self-Test) that checks the system's hardware, such as RAM, CPU, and I/O devices, ensuring they are functioning correctly. It also locates and initializes the boot device to start the operating system. The BIOS is not OS-specific, meaning it operates independently of any installed operating system.
