Guide for SMPT (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)

What is SMTP?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a set of communication guidelines that allow software to transmit email over the Internet. It is a protocol used by mail servers to send and receive emails.

Why is it important?
SMTP is an essential aspect of communication on the internet and facilitates the sending of emails. It is through SMTP, that emails are forwarded from one server to another and finally reach their intended recipient. Therefore, understanding SMTP is crucial because without it, the functionality of email as we know it would not exist.

How does SMTP work?
SMTP works by establishing a connection and dialogue between two servers (the sending server and the receiving server) using a process that revolves around three basic commands – EHLO, MAIL FROM and RCPT TO. It manages message transmission, and decides how and when a message needs to be sent from the sender to the receiver.

Exam Tips: Answering Questions on Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an internet standard for electronic mail (email) transmission across IP networks. SMTP is a text-based protocol that allows client-server applications to send and receive email messages by specifying the message sender, recipient(s), and the content to be sent. Email messages are sent through SMTP servers using a store-and-forward model, where the message is sent from client to server and is temporarily stored on the server until it is sent to the destination server. SMTP uses Port 25 as its default communication port.
