Guide: Windows Registry and Configuration Management
What is Windows Registry and Configuration Management:
The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that holds low-level settings for the Microsoft Windows operating system and for applications that opt to use the registry. It provides a way to store information and settings for software & hardware. Configuration Management, on the other hand, is a system's way of keeping track of its hardware and software components, the status of each component, and more importantly, the interrelationships among them.
Why it is Important:
It is vital as it lets installation programs write settings into a centralized and standardized location. This location can be backed up and restored, providing a way to return to a previous system state. It's crucial to manage configurations to prevent inconsistencies in the IT environment that can lead to issues like system failures, security vulnerabilities etc.
How it Works:
Each time software is installed or settings are modified, a new key (containing specific value) is added to Windows Registry. These keys and values are then utilized by Windows OS to understand software behavior. In configuration management, each component configuration is recorded and updated when changes occur.
Exam Tips:
1. Understand the functions and the structure of Windows Registry.
2. Be aware of the implications of altering Registry keys.
3. Have knowledge on how to backup and restore the Registry.
4. Understand principles of configuration management and how it supports the overall ITIL lifecycle.
5. Be prepared to apply knowledge of both concepts in real-world scenarios.
6. Practice problem-solving questions related to registry errors and configuration inconsistencies.
