Virtual Machine Guide

A Virtual Machine (VM) is a software emulation of a physical computer, running an operating system and applications, just like a physical computer. VMs operate based on virtualizing technology that separates compute environments from the actual physical infrastructure.

Why is it Important?
VMs are integral to modern computing for reasons such as: Cost Efficiency, where businesses can invest in less physical hardware; Scalability, as VMs can be added or subtracted as needed; and, Security, since virtualization offers a way to isolate user resources.

How does it Work?
A VM works by distributing a physical machine's compute resources to multiple environments. A software called a hypervisor is used to divide these resources effectively and ensure that the environments do not interfere with each other.

Exam Tips: Answering Questions on Virtual Machine
1. Understand the benefits of virtual machines: efficiency, flexibility and security. 2. Understand how a VM works, especially the role of a hypervisor 3. Familiarize yourself with use-cases for VMs, like testing & development, running old software, and server consolidation. 4. Be aware of potential drawbacks, such as performance impacts 5. Illustrate your answers with concrete examples whenever possible.

Remember, a VM is a simulation of a machine (i.e., a computer) that is managed by a software called a hypervisor. It's like having a PC running on your PC, enabling you to do tasks that might not be possible with your current operating system.

A virtual machine (VM) is a software-based representation of a physical computer, that can run an operating system and applications, while sharing the resources of a physical host computer. VMs enable efficient use of computing resources, as multiple VMs can run on a single physical host. A hypervisor or virtual machine monitor (VMM) manages the allocation of resources to the VMs and isolates them (memory, CPU, storage, etc.) from one another, ensuring that they function independently. VMs can be used in networking scenarios to host network services, isolate network environments, or run network simulations and testing.
