Mediation and Third-Party Intervention in Scrum
What it is:
Mediation and Third-Party Intervention is a conflict resolution process in which a neutral third party (mediator) helps the parties involved in a conflict to find a mutually actionable solution. Scrum encourages resolving conflicts by the team itself but in a situation where team members cannot find a common ground, the intervention of a third party becomes critical.
Why it's important:
Conflicts, if not resolved properly, can affect the team's productivity, morale, and overall project success. Mediation allows the team to understand and respect each other's perspectives, and to work towards a solution that satisfies all parties. It also keeps the team focused on business objectives thereby improving collaborative efforts.
How it works:
A mediator, who could be a scrum master or an external person, facilitates the process of identifying issues, exploring possible solutions, and negotiating agreement. The mediator does not dictate a solution but supports the team to develop their own.
Answering Exam Questions and Tips:
When answering questions about mediation and third-party intervention, focus on its role and benefits in conflict resolution. Be clear on the mediator's role – facilitating versus dictating a resolution. Use precise language and refer to real-life examples if possible. Remember, the goal of this is communication and resolution – not deciding a victor or a loser. Tip: Do not forget the emotional aspect of conflicts. Identify the importance of empathy, listening, and respect in the process of mediation.

Mediation and Third-Party Intervention practice test
Sometimes, despite best efforts to manage conflicts, an external perspective can be helpful to resolve encompassing disagreements that could be harming the Scrum process. Mediation is a structured, interactive process where a neutral third party assists disputing parties in resolving conflict through the use of specialized communication and negotiation techniques. This concept is vital because a ScrumMaster should be able to recognize when mediation is necessary and facilitate the process in a way that helps team members move towards resolution.
