Guide to Story Points in Scrum PSM I: Importance, Definition, Function and Exam Tips

Story Points are a measure of the overall effort that will be required to fully implement a product backlog item or any other piece of work. When we assign Story Points, we consider all the aspects of the work, including complexity, risk, and repetition.
Why are Story Points Important?
Story Points are important as they help the team to estimate work and forecast progress. They provide a shared understanding of the amount of effort needed to complete a task, promoting effective communication within the team.
How Story Points Work?
Team members collectively decide on a 'base story' and assign it a value (usually a number like '1'). Then, they assess the size of other user stories relative to the base story, assigning them point values that reflect their complexity or scope. The total points of all items is sometimes used to predict how much the team can accomplish during a Scrum sprint.
Exam Tips: Answering Questions on Story Points
1. Remember that Story Points are relative measures rather than absolute time.
2. Understand the concept of a 'base story'.
3. Know how Story Points help in predicting the team's velocity.
4. Be aware that changes to the team can affect point estimations.
5. Remember the Story Points are decided by the team, not the Scrum Master or Product Owner.

Story Points practice test

Story Points are a unit of measure for expressing an estimate of the overall effort that will be required to fully implement a product backlog item or any other piece of work. When we estimate with story points, we assign a point value to each item. The raw values we assign are unimportant. What matters are the relative values. A story that is assigned a 2 should be twice as much as work as a story that is assigned a 1. It should also be two-thirds of the work of a story that is estimated 3 story points. It is a way to estimate the complexity, risk and repetition of a task.
