Commitment
The Scrum Value 'commitment' is about the team explicitly making promises and wholeheartedly dedicating themselves to meet the goals. It refers towards agreeing on a realistic Sprint goal and working towards it. Commitment indicates dedication not only to the job at hand but to the entire project and the team’s shared objectives. This also includes the ability to acknowledge when the original commitments may need adjustments and the willingness to make those required changes.
Courage
The value of 'courage' in a Scrum team which implies the bravery to take on difficult tasks, to make tough decisions and to express their opinions even when they are unpopular. Courage can lead to innovation, quality, and improvements in productivity as team members feel empowered to do what they believe is right. This also means standing up for what's right, challenging the status quo when necessary, and working to find a better way.
Focus
'Focus' in Scrum is about concentrating on only a few things at a time. Team members commit to small, manageable objectives and giving them their full attention until they are complete. By emphasizing focus, teams can deliver quality over quantity and make constant progress towards achieving the ultimate goal. Focus allows for better productivity, clearer understanding of tasks at hand, and prevents the confusion and inefficiency that can result from multi-tasking.
Openness
The Scrum value 'openness' means being open to feedback and suggestions from team members, stakeholders and customers. It requires team members to be transparent about their work, progress, and issues they are facing. This also means being open to learning, changing based on experience, and altering course if it benefits the project. Within a Scrum Team, openness can create an environment of trust where everyone is allowed to speak up and share ideas.
Respect
The Scrum value 'respect’ calls for respecting each other’s individuality and uniqueness. This means recognizing everyone’s capabilities, acknowledging the part they have to play in the team, and understanding that every thought and opinion can be valuable. Additionally, 'respect' implies treating others with decency and honoring their contributions to the team and the project. Through respect, diverse teams can work together to solve complex problems.
Empiricism
Empiricism is one of the key principles underpinning the Scrum framework and lies at the heart of adapting to change and continuous improvement. It implies that knowledge originates directly from practical experience and observations. The empirical approach equips the team with the ability to adapt to changes by inspecting and adapting based on evidence rather than assumptions or predilections. The three pillars of empiricism include transparency, inspection, and adaptation. Transparency allows all aspects of a process to be visible to those who are responsible for managing the results. Inspection involves regular examination of both the product and the processes used to deliver it to uncover any potential problems or discrepancies. Adaptation means adjusting tactics if the inspection indicates that it's necessary to optimize effectiveness and productivity.
Self-Organization
Self-organization is a characteristic of Scrum teams where team members decide among themselves who will do which tasks, when, and how. The team is empowered to manage their own work, therefore enhancing their efficiency and productivity. This promotes greater ownership, motivation, and responsibility towards the work in hand among team members resulting in improved project outcomes. It's crucial that the team is composed of members with the necessary skills and knowledge required for project execution to ensure feasibility of self-organization. In such an environment of trust and shared responsibility, improvements and innovations often emerge organically.
Timeboxing
Timeboxing is a time management technique in Scrum which involves assigning a fixed, maximum unit of time for an activity. This applies to all Scrum events such as the Daily Scrum, Sprint Planning, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective. It creates a sense of urgency, maximizes productivity, minimizes waste, and ensures predictability by preventing needless perfectionism and proliferation of discussions. It forces teams to prioritize, make decisions promptly, and focus on delivering something of value even if it's not perfect. This promotes iterative improvement and incremental delivery.
The Sprint
The Sprint is the core of a Scrum project, representing a consistent duration of time during which a potentially shippable product increment is created. It provides a framework for regular feedback and inspected adaptation, which leads to a continuous improvement process. The duration of a Sprint is usually between 2-4 weeks and all work to be done is agreed upon during the Sprint Planning. During the Sprint, the Development Team works on completing the agreed tasks and the product increment is reviewed and assessed at the end of the Sprint during the Sprint Review. The Sprint concludes with a Sprint Retrospective, where improvements for the next Sprint are identified.
Definition of Done
The Definition of Done is an important concept that defines what it means for work to be completed. It's a shared understanding of the team regarding the quality of work that must be achieved in the development of a product increment. It acts as a checklist which ensures transparency and quality control for every piece of work product. It provides a clear understanding to the team about what is expected of them and what the outcome should look like.
