AWS Server Migration Service (SMS) is a service that automates, simplifies, and accelerates the migration of on-premises servers to AWS. It allows you to migrate virtual machines from your existing infrastructure to Amazon EC2 instances at scale. SMS provides several key benefits: 1. Automated migration: It replicates your server VMs as AWS AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) that are ready to deploy on EC2. 2. Incremental replication: SMS incrementally replicates your server VMs, which minimizes data transfer and reduces cutover downtime during migration. 3. Multi-server migrations: You can migrate large numbers of servers simultaneously, tracking progress through the SMS console. 4. Support for various platforms: SMS works with VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Azure VMs. 5. Integration with AWS Migration Hub: This gives you a single location to track migration status across multiple AWS tools. The migration process involves: - Installing the SMS connector in your environment - Setting up replication jobs for each server - Testing migrated instances before final cutover - Launching production instances from the replicated AMIs SMS helps organizations move away from maintaining physical data centers by providing an orderly path to cloud migration. It's particularly useful for large-scale migrations where manually moving each server would be time-consuming and error-prone. For enterprise migrations, SMS can be part of a broader strategy that includes AWS Application Discovery Service for inventory assessment and AWS Database Migration Service for database migrations. SMS has been replaced by AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) as the primary migration service, though existing SMS users can continue using it.
