Hardware
Physical components of a computer
Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer system that you can touch and manipulate. In CompTIA A+ certification, understanding hardware is fundamental as it forms the core of computer systems. The motherboard serves as the main circuit board connecting all components. It houses the CPU (Central Processing Unit), which acts as the "brain" of the computer, executing instructions and performing calculations. RAM (Random Access Memory) provides temporary storage for data that the CPU needs to access quickly. Storage devices include HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) with mechanical parts and SSDs (Solid State Drives) with no moving parts, offering faster performance. Optical drives (DVD/Blu-ray) and removable media provide additional storage options. Input devices allow users to interact with computers. These include keyboards, mice, touchpads, scanners, and webcams. Output devices present information to users, such as monitors, printers, projectors, and speakers. Expansion cards enhance system capabilities. Graphics cards process visual data for displays, sound cards handle audio processing, and network interface cards enable network connectivity. Power supplies convert AC power to DC power for system components, while cooling systems (fans, heat sinks, liquid cooling) prevent overheating. Peripherals expand functionality: external drives, USB devices, KVM switches, and specialized equipment. In modern computing, form factors vary from traditional desktop towers to all-in-one systems, laptops, tablets, and smartphones—each with unique hardware configurations. CompTIA A+ certification requires understanding hardware specifications, compatibility, installation procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and maintenance practices to ensure optimal system performance and reliability. Hardware knowledge forms the foundation for more advanced IT skills and is essential for diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading computer systems.
