Virtualization and Cloud Computing

Virtualization and Cloud Computing are fundamental technologies in modern IT infrastructure covered in CompTIA A+. Virtualization creates software-based representations of physical computing resources. Through a hypervisor (virtualization software), multiple virtual machines (VMs) can run on a single physical server, each with its own operating system and applications. Types include server virtualization, desktop virtualization (VDI), and network virtualization. Cloud Computing leverages virtualization to deliver computing resources as services over the internet. The CompTIA A+ certification covers three main service models: 1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Provides virtualized computing resources (servers, storage, networks) that users can provision and manage. 2. Platform as a Service (PaaS): Offers development platforms where users can build, test, and deploy applications. 3. Software as a Service (SaaS): Delivers fully functional applications accessed through web browsers. Cloud deployment models include: - Public cloud: Resources shared among multiple organizations - Private cloud: Dedicated to a single organization - Hybrid cloud: Combination of public and private - Community cloud: Shared by organizations with common interests Virtualization serves as the foundation for cloud computing, enabling resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and on-demand self-service. Cloud computing extends virtualization by adding service delivery models, metered billing, and broad network access. From a CompTIA A+ perspective, IT professionals should understand how to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot virtual environments and cloud services as these technologies continue to transform IT operations.
