Network Devices
Devices used in modern networks
Network devices are essential components in any network infrastructure, serving specific functions to enable data communication. The CompTIA Network+ certification covers several key network devices. Routers operate at Layer 3 (Network Layer) of the OSI model, making forwarding decisions based on IP addresses. They connect different networks together and determine the best path for data packets to reach their destination using routing protocols like OSPF, EIGRP, or BGP. Switches function at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer), forwarding frames based on MAC addresses. They create separate collision domains for each port, improving network efficiency. Managed switches offer configuration capabilities while unmanaged switches operate with default settings. Firewalls provide security by filtering traffic based on predefined rules. They can operate at different OSI layers depending on their type (packet filtering, stateful inspection, or application-level gateways). Wireless Access Points (WAPs) connect wireless devices to wired networks, supporting standards like 802.11ac/ax (Wi-Fi 5/6). Load balancers distribute network traffic across multiple servers to ensure no single server becomes overwhelmed, improving application availability and responsiveness. Proxies serve as intermediaries between clients and servers, providing caching, filtering, and security benefits. Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS) monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and can actively block potential threats. Network Attached Storage (NAS) provides file-level data storage services to network clients. VoIP gateways connect traditional telephone systems with IP-based voice networks. Modems convert digital signals to analog and vice versa for transmission over telephone lines. Repeaters and extenders amplify network signals to overcome distance limitations. Network controllers provide centralized management for enterprise networks, especially in software-defined networking environments.
