Process Goals and Decision Points

In Disciplined Agile (DA), Process Goals and Decision Points are fundamental concepts that guide teams in tailoring their way of working. Process Goals represent specific objectives teams need to achieve within their process. They focus on outcomes rather than prescribing exact practices. Examples include "Explore Scope," "Coordinate Activities," and "Evolve the Team's Way of Working." Each goal addresses a particular aspect of solution delivery and specifies what needs to be accomplished, not how to do it. Decision Points exist within each Process Goal and represent the choices teams must make about how they'll achieve that goal. For instance, under the "Plan Work" goal, teams might face decision points like "How will we plan?", "How will we manage our work?", or "How will we estimate work?" For each Decision Point, DA offers a range of potential options or practices, from simple to advanced. Teams select options based on their context, capabilities, and needs. These options aren't presented as a menu where any choice is equally valid—they're arranged as a guided continuum from basic to advanced approaches. The power of this approach is contextual application. Rather than following rigid frameworks, teams thoughtfully select strategies appropriate to their unique situation. A new team might choose simpler practices, while experienced teams might implement more sophisticated options. DA emphasizes guided continuous improvement through these structures. As teams mature, they revisit Decision Points and evolve their choices toward more effective practices. This framework balances freedom with guidance—teams have autonomy to choose their way of working while benefiting from curated options that represent industry learning. It's practical rather than theoretical, helping teams make concrete decisions about how they'll operate in their specific environment.
