Scrum Values

The Scrum Values represent the core ethics that guide effective Scrum practice. These five values - Commitment, Courage, Focus, Openness, and Respect - create the foundation for successful teams and products in the Scrum framework. Commitment means team members personally dedicate themselves to achieving the Sprint Goal and continuously improving. The team commits to quality work and supporting each other, not to unrealistic demands or impossible deadlines. This value builds trust both within the team and with stakeholders. Courage manifests when teams tackle challenging problems, admit when they're wrong, and make difficult decisions. It takes courage to be transparent about impediments, to experiment with new approaches, and to speak up when practices drift from Scrum principles. Focus directs attention toward what matters most - delivering valuable increments and meeting the Sprint Goal. By limiting work in progress and maintaining clear priorities, Scrum Teams avoid context-switching and maximize productivity on important work. Openness creates transparency about all aspects of the work - progress, challenges, learnings, and uncertainties. Team members share information freely, creating environments where innovation thrives and problems surface early when they're easier to address. Respect acknowledges each person's expertise, background, and unique contributions. Team members respect each other's opinions, experiences, and autonomy while collaborating toward shared objectives. These values reinforce one another and become most powerful when embodied collectively. For example, openness requires courage; commitment strengthens through respect; focus improves when the team operates with openness. The Scrum Values align with empiricism (making decisions based on observation and experience) and serve as behavioral guideposts. When teams consistently demonstrate these values, they create psychological safety, enhance collaboration, and ultimately deliver better products.
