Servant Leadership
Servant Leadership is a leadership philosophy that's central to Scrum and focuses on the leader's role as a servant to the team, instead of a command-and-control figure. The leader's role involves removing impediments that prevent the team from achieving their goals, fostering an environment of communication and collaboration, and promoting team development. This paradigm shift empowers teams, promotes self-organization, and ultimately leads to high performance and innovative solutions.
Empowerment and Trust
Leadership in Agile and Scrum involves providing the team with the tools, authority, and autonomy to make their own decisions. This cultivates intrinsic motivation, promotes ownership, and enables teams to be self-organizing and self-managing. Critical to this is trust - leaders must trust that the team is able and motivated to achieve the best outcomes. Trust also fosters an open and safe environment where teams feel free to experiment, learn, and innovate.
Open Communication
Open Communication supports transparency, a key pillar of Scrum. Leaders foster an environment where information is freely available, questions are encouraged, and feedback is welcomed. Open communication enables problems to be surfaced and resolved quickly, helps the team align on goals and expectations, and reinforces shared understanding and collective ownership. Besides, it reduces uncertainties and misunderstandings, therefore, promoting effective self-organization.
Adaptive Leadership
Adaptive Leadership is about responding effectively to changing conditions, a constant in the agile world. It involves influencing and guiding the team to embrace and navigate the change in order to meet project goals. Adaptive leaders use feedback loops for fast learning and adaptations, encourage flexibility and resilience, and promote a culture of innovation. By doing so, they enable the team to self-organize around changes effectively, ensuring continued value delivery.
Agile Decision-making
Agile decision-making involves making real-time decisions based on the current available data and the ability to adapt as required. In an Agile leadership role, the leader needs to empower the team to make their own decisions and provide a safety net to learn from their mistakes. This involves a shift from a command-and-control style of management to a more collaborative and inclusive decision making process.
Feedback Culture
In Agile Leadership, creating a feedback culture is crucial. Agile leaders understand that for teams to grow and learn, robust and constructive feedback systems must be in place. To enable this, they create a safe space where team members feel comfortable giving and receiving feedback. Moreover, leaders also need to model this behavior by giving open feedback and show receptivity to feedback received.
Agile Coaching
Agile Coaching is a leadership style focused on guiding the team towards improving the way they work and their interactions within the team and with the rest of the organisation. As AGile Coaches, leaders help teams to understand the Agile Principles, implement and promote Agile Practices, overcome obstacles, communicate better and adopt a growth mindset. An Agile Coach acts more like a facilitator than a traditional manager.
Collaborative Culture
Collaborative culture is another key concept. In the context of an agile environment, this means creating a space where open dialogues are promoted, and every team member feels valued. Leaders need to foster collaboration by setting shared goals and encouraging the team to work together to achieve them. This can also include employing techniques such as pairing, or moderating debates to reach a consensus. A cooperative culture helps to break down departmental silos, promote understanding, and generate innovative solutions to problems. It is a powerful force that enables organizations to respond swiftly and effectively to change.
Respect for Individuals
This concept emphasizes the value of every team member's contribution. It means understanding and appreciating everyone's unique abilities and perspectives, as well as fostering an environment of mutual trust and respect. This involves transparent communication, inclusivity, and a clear recognition of roles and responsibilities. Agile leaders play a critical role in leading by example, ensuring that every team member is treated with respect, and that their suggestions, ideas, and concerns are taken into consideration. This motivates team members, promoting a culture of ownership, innovation, and engagement.
Transparency
Transparency is fundamental in Agile Leadership. It includes open communication channels, clear sharing of roles and responsibilities, and full visibility into project progress. Agile leaders should create an environment where information-sharing is the norm, allowing for better decision making, increased trust, and a more cohesive team. Part of transparency also includes leaders admitting when they're wrong and taking responsibility for failures. This demonstration of accountability builds trust within the team and promotes a culture of honesty and mutual respect.
