Sprint Planning and Execution
Deep dive into Sprint planning
Sprint Planning is a collaborative event in Scrum where the team decides what work to complete in the upcoming Sprint and how to accomplish it. This meeting is typically time-boxed to 8 hours for a one-month Sprint, with shorter Sprints having proportionally shorter planning sessions. During Sprint Planning, the Product Owner presents the highest priority Product Backlog items, and the entire Scrum Team collaborates to understand the work. The Development Team then forecasts what items they can deliver in the Sprint and creates a Sprint Goal—a short, coherent statement describing what they plan to achieve. The team also determines "how" they'll accomplish the work by breaking down backlog items into tasks of one day or less. The output is a Sprint Backlog, which includes the selected Product Backlog items and the plan for delivering them. Once Sprint Planning concludes, Sprint Execution begins. During this phase, the Development Team self-organizes to complete the work they committed to during planning. They hold Daily Scrums (15-minute time-boxed events) to sync up on progress and plan the next 24 hours of work. During execution, the team adheres to their Definition of Done, ensuring all completed work meets agreed-upon quality standards. The Scrum Master serves as a facilitator, removing impediments and protecting the team from external interruptions. The Product Owner remains available to clarify requirements but doesn't interfere with how the team organizes their work. The team focuses solely on achieving the Sprint Goal, maintaining a sustainable pace throughout. No changes that would endanger the Sprint Goal should be made during execution, though scope may be clarified and renegotiated as new information emerges. Sprint Execution concludes with Sprint Review and Retrospective, leading into planning for the next Sprint.
