In the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) syllabus, Testing Quality Characteristics covers how a Test Analyst evaluates the product against quality attributes defined by the ISO/IEC 25010 product quality model. The Test Analyst focuses on characteristics that are mostly business- and user-oriented. More technical characteristics such as performance efficiency, security, reliability and maintainability are mainly the job of the Technical Test Analyst.
1. Functional Suitability: This is the main focus. It has three sub-characteristics. Functional correctness checks that the system gives accurate results, such as correct calculations and data handling. Functional appropriateness checks that functions help users achieve their tasks and goals. Functional completeness checks that the functions cover all specified tasks and objectives. Test Analysts apply black-box techniques such as equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, state transition testing and use case testing.
2. Usability (called interaction capability in the newer ISO 25010:2023 terminology): This assesses how effectively, efficiently and satisfyingly users can use the system. Aspects include learnability, operability, user error protection, user interface aesthetics, accessibility and recognizability. Approaches include usability evaluations, heuristic reviews, inspections, user surveys and questionnaires (for example SUMI or WAMMI), and checking compliance with standards such as WCAG.
3. Compatibility, especially interoperability: This verifies that the system exchanges and uses information correctly with other systems, devices or components in different configurations and environments.
4. Portability or flexibility aspects: These include adaptability, installability and replaceability. The Test Analyst may contribute to them from the user's perspective.
The Test Analyst's responsibilities include identifying relevant quality risks and deriving test conditions for each characteristic. They also choose appropriate test techniques, define measurable acceptance criteria, and involve real users or domain experts where needed. Testing quality characteristics ensures the product meets both explicit requirements and implicit stakeholder expectations, and provides a broader view of quality than functional correctness alone. In the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) syllabus, Testing Quality Characteristics covers how a Test Analyst evaluates the product against quality attributes defined by the ISO/IEC 25010 product quality model.
