PRINCE2 Agile Practices and Artifacts

PRINCE2 Agile combines the structured governance of PRINCE2 with the flexibility of agile ways of working. In PRINCE2 (2023 version), the term 'themes' was updated to 'practices', and 'management products' were updated to 'artifacts', aligning terminology across the framework. PRINCE2 Agile applies these seven practices in an agile context. The practices are: Business Case (justifying the project and ensuring value delivery incrementally), Organizing (defining roles and responsibilities, integrating agile roles like Product Owner and Scrum Master into PRINCE2 structures), Plans (using agile planning techniques such as release and sprint planning, timeboxing, and estimation), Quality (emphasizing customer requirements through techniques like acceptance criteria, definition of done, and prioritization), Risk (managing uncertainty, with agile helping to reduce risk through early and frequent delivery), Issues (handling changes flexibly, treating requirements as variable while fixing time and cost), and Progress (monitoring using agile metrics like burn charts, velocity, and information radiators). Each practice is tailored to work with agile behaviours, concepts, and techniques. Artifacts in PRINCE2 Agile are the management documents and records that support project control. These include baseline artifacts (like the Project Initiation Documentation and Project Plan), records (such as the Risk Register, Issue Register, and Quality Register), and reports (like Highlight Reports and End Stage Reports). In an agile environment, these artifacts may be simplified, made more visual, or maintained collaboratively using tools like whiteboards, information radiators, and digital boards to promote transparency. PRINCE2 Agile encourages tailoring artifacts to be lightweight while still providing necessary governance and assurance. The key principle is applying the appropriate level of formality: keeping essential controls for directing and managing while embracing agile's focus on collaboration, self-organization, and frequent delivery. This blend ensures projects remain both well-governed and adaptable to change, delivering value continuously to stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle effectively.
