PRINCE2 Agile Processes and Agile Workshops

PRINCE2 Agile combines the structured governance of PRINCE2 with the flexibility of agile ways of working. In terms of PRINCE2 Processes, there are seven processes that guide a project from start to finish: Starting up a Project, Directing a Project, Initiating a Project, Controlling a Stage, Managing Product Delivery, Managing a Stage Boundary, and Closing a Project. In an agile context, these processes are tailored rather than replaced. For example, the 'Managing Product Delivery' process aligns closely with agile delivery, where teams work in timeboxes (sprints) and use agile techniques to create products iteratively and incrementally. 'Directing a Project' still provides essential governance, but decision-making can be more delegated to empowered teams. 'Controlling a Stage' incorporates agile concepts like releases and sprints, using information radiators and frequent feedback to monitor progress. The processes maintain control and direction while allowing agile behaviours, concepts, and techniques to flourish within them. Agile Workshops are collaborative sessions used throughout agile projects to encourage engagement, communication, and shared understanding among stakeholders and team members. Common workshops include: sprint planning, where the team decides what to deliver in the next timebox; daily stand-ups, brief meetings to synchronise work and identify blockers; sprint reviews, where completed work is demonstrated to stakeholders for feedback; and retrospectives, where the team reflects on how to improve their ways of working. Workshops also support requirements gathering, prioritisation (using techniques like MoSCoW), and estimation (such as planning poker). They embody agile values by promoting face-to-face communication, transparency, and continuous improvement. In PRINCE2 Agile, these workshops fit naturally within the processes, enabling collaboration while preserving PRINCE2's management framework. Together, the tailored processes and agile workshops allow projects to be delivered flexibly and iteratively while retaining the strategic direction, control, and accountability that PRINCE2 provides, ensuring both agility and governance are balanced effectively for successful outcomes.
